The joy of book nooks

I've seen the little book nooks for the last few years - you know the ones, the little tiny house, street, bookshop or cafe scenes which fit on a bookshelf and look like little glimpses into a magical miniature world. And then, to my great joy, my husband gave me one for Christmas.

He hadn't quite anticipated how quickly I'd get started and how exclusively I would focus on it until it was finished - the next day! I found it utterly fascinating and compelling to see the pieces coming together and building up the cosy bookshop scene in all its detail.

The rational part of me knew that it would not actually be difficult making the electrical connections to make the light work - but the sense of achievement I got from that, and the lights working perfectly when I tested the switch was utterly fantastic!

I'm utterly delighted with the finished scene, and already knew where it was going to go - on my Swedish bookshelf in the living room, by the chair I often sit in to read. My husband wasn't sure there'd be space, so I pointed out that (without him noticing) I'd already got some books on the third shelf and had moved some of his out of the way to make space for them, so could certainly move a few more!

Seeing the first book nook complete and shining out amongst my books, of course I completely failed to suppress the impulse to buy another on - which duly arrived the next day. This second one, a little street scene with a cafe and bookshop turned out to be considerably more complicated and fiddly - and this time had three lights to connect! Being in a white frame, it also meant painting the edges of many pieces with multiple coats of white paint which was somewhat tedious, but definitely worthwhile for the overall look of the finished item.

This finished nook is now safely ensconced on the larger white bookshelf behind the settee, nestled between 'The Cat who Saved Books' and the Little Women series.

The only problem is, now I've been bitten by the bug and want to make more of these! Maybe I need to take some not-often-reread books to work as I have plenty of empty shelves in my office there. A few books and nooks could make a lovely difference! And of course what I'd really love is a Moominhouse book nook, but sadly they don't exist. Maybe one day...
