Caen I speak French??

chgbayliss

This weekend my mum and I are off on our own little adventure to France. Actually we're going to visit Elder Daughter and bring back as much as possible of her stuff so she can manage the rest of it by herself in a fortnight, but we're looking forward to a lovely long weekend together.

Unlike my last trip to France a couple of months ago, this time I haven't been brushing up on Duolingo in advance but will just do my best with whatever I can remember. Those who know me will be entirely unsurprised that most of the vocabulary I can remember with confidence relates to buying food. And let's be honest, that's the most important bit to be able to manage!

This time we're planning on visiting the Bayeux Tapestry Museum since it's really not that far from Caen, where we're staying. I came across a fascinating documentary a few weeks ago on BBC iPlayer, all about the tapestry, how it was made, the way the original colours are being researched, the story told by the embroidery, and the very little that is known if its origins. That definitely took it from 'yeah, that'd be interesting to see one day I guess' to 'wow, I'd love to see that for real!' - so that's about the only solid plan we have for the trip!

So far we've made it down to Portsmouth, and had a lovely dinner at a wonderful little Italian restaurant. We had a gentle stroll back to the car, and got back just moments before it started raining! At the port, we of course had to sit and wait for a long time - but we'd both far rather that than be rushed and stressed - so I got out the knitting needles and new ball of yarn, and got started on a new pair of socks.

We're now on the ferry and have had a nice cuppa and a bowl of fruit salad while waiting for it to depart. Then it'll be bed time, and when we wake up we'll be almost arrived in France!
